UK rappers, Little Simz and Stormzy, were presented with awards to commend their achievements at the AIM awards ceremony last night (6 September).

The ceremony, which is presented by AIM (Association of Independent Music), took place last night in East London and aimed to highlight and reward the efforts made by independent music artists in the past year.

Simz’s debut album ‘A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons’ earned her the Independent Album of the Year award while Stormzy received the Innovator Award for his mainstream success as an indie artist.

The Innovator Award is another achievement for Stormzy to add to his never-ending record of accolades. The 23 year-old managed to take home two awards at last year’s MOBOs, and his freestyle ‘Wicked Skengman 4’ is now certified gold – the first time any UK artist has received a gold plaque for a freestyle.

From receiving a co-sign from Kendrick Lamar to performing on BBC One’s Later with Jools Holland, Little Simz has also had many high moments in the short space of her music career so far. A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons peaked at no.20 in the UK R&B Albums Charts and was well received by her supporters and many mainstream publications.

In previous years, MIA awards have gone to other urban acts such as Wiley and Skepta – two artists who have both gone on to reshape the music industry in dynamic ways. The former publicly showed his support for both Simz and Stormzy by retweeting Little Simz’s reaction to her win.

Little Simz and Stormzy joined forces with UK legend, Kano, almost a year ago to deliver the remix to the standout track from Simz’s debut, ‘Dead Body’.
